Pokagon State Park and the Toboggan Run

Pokagon State Park and the Toboggan Run

In the middle of winter
Two gift cards in hand
A weekend set aside for fun
Somewhere away
Somewhere beyond the distractions of home
Somewhere giving just the three of us
More time to bond
.
In the farthest northeast corner of Indiana
Weaving between lakes
Found in Pokagon State Park
We booked a room for the weekend
At Potawatomi Inn
Our bags packed with winter layers
Squeezing in our swimsuits
Along side our warmest everything
Snacks, books and maps
.
In the morning
A fresh, thin layer of snow
Covering the ground
The sun glittering over the ice on the solid Lake James
A crowd steadily growing
Waiting in line for tickets
A chance to ride down an icy slide
Through a tunnel of snowy trees
Truly a winter wonderland
With all the giggles and glee
.
Built during a tougher time
A collection of young men
A part of the government’s CCC
Building structures from stone and wood
And the original toboggan run
Truly a mark of craftsmanship
A work of art
Created to last
With simple tools and lots of hands
A reminder of a time with many needs
Creative solutions
And
Willingness
.
Interlocking together on the sled
Working to create a bond
Holding on tight
Figuring it out
Enjoying the moment for laughter
Carrying it back up
And going again
.
