Strawberry Picking

Strawberry Picking

Claiming they were the freshest
This way
My cousin would kneel down and
Eat strawberries
Right off the vine
Convincing us to try
His way
Our butts in the air,
Nibbling away
Each claiming we had found the best one
Leaving little tops on the vine
For someone else to find
.
She probably knew-
Laughing from the dinning room window
But maybe she didn’t
And wasn’t pretending
My grandma always claiming
Bunnies were stealing her berries.
.
Weeks before
She would call us up-
Thousands of miles away-
To let us know
They were blooming
Perfect timing for us to visit.
But we better come quick-
Before the bunnies get them
Red juicy berries
Right out of her garden
Definitely a highlight of our trip
To Indiana in late Spring
.
Decades later
A new generation of littles
Living in the Midwest
We have patches of our own.
But sometimes is just fun-
To pile in a van
To go
On a little adventure
Somewhere else.
Patches seem to be popping up everywhere.
In backyards
And U-Pick farms
So we go
Near by
To spend a few hours together
Finding the perfect one.
.
The Strawberry Patch
.
If you live near by we love to go to
Bell’s Farm in Hagerstown, Indiana
Or now to my sister’s farm
Jones Family Farm in Milton, Indiana
.
Do you have a favorite patch to visit?
